Abortion on demand was legalized in South Africa

Fifteen years have passed since abortion on demand was legalized in South Africa. Since then it is estimated that over one million unborn children were denied the most fundamental of rights, the right to life. We remember those one million babies. Those aborted fifteen years ago would now be in grade 9 or 10, bringing joy to their families and planning their own futures. Those whose lives were ‘terminated’ ten years ago would now be playing on the streets of our towns and villages in the evenings and singing and praying with us in our churches on Sunday. We regret that those children of God were denied the right to be born into God’s world and to enrich it with their own unique gifts and talents. We will never fully realize what we have missed because the law says “abortion is fine”.

When the legislation was being discussed those in favour of it said it would save some mothers from the dangers of what has become known as “back-street abortions”. We question if this has in fact been the case. On almost every electricity pole along the streets of our cities and towns there are advertisements for ‘safe and painless’ abortions. They are outside the Head Office of the Department of Health in Pretoria and on the boundary walls of our schools. If the advertising is so public and so widespread, then the demand for those” back-street abortions” must be high.

The position of the Catholic Church on abortion is clear and unambiguous. Just because the law says it is legal does not make it morally right. Each unborn child is created by God, “knit together in (its) mother’s womb” (Ps139.13) .That unborn child is a human being with a human life that must be protected. He or she has a right to life, a right that must be respected by the mother and protected by the state.

Another right that must be respected by the state and its agents is that of conscientious objection. Those who believe that abortion is morally wrong have a right to refuse to participate in the medical procedures.

All of us, parents, teachers, members of the Church, must understand what a young girl is going through when she realizes she is pregnant. She needs our love, our support, our understanding and sometimes our forgiveness. We in the Church are committed to helping unmarried pregnant girls and couples tempted to take the abortion route in whatever way we can. We will never condemn, just as Jesus refused to condemn (John 8.11)

As we remember the many children who have been aborted since February 1997, we also remember the mothers of these children. Just as we do not condemn a pregnant young girl, we do not condemn her if she made the mistake of procuring an abortion. Only she knows how much she has suffered as a result. She needs help and healing. We invite her to come and speak to one of our priests or counsellors so that we can be part of reconciling her to God and bringing about healing.

«To Be Born»: la impactante película… que está salvando vidas

Prácticamente todos los que están involucrados en el mundo pro-vida comparten un sueño: dar vida a los no nacidos para que digan a las mujeres lo que implica la realidad del aborto. Pues ahora este ideal está siendo realidad gracias a To Be Born, una película corta (short film) producida por Spirit Juice Studios.

La historia nació hace diez años en la mente del P. Stephen Lesniewski, sacerdote de la diócesis de Chicago e ideador del proyecto, que ya estaba involucrado en la lucha por salvar vidas del aborto. Pero, en ese entonces, el sacerdote usaba un escrito de Marisol Hernández llamado «A letter from an Aborted Child» (una carta de un hijo abortado). El P. Lesniewski acudía a las puertas de los abortorios dos o tres veces por semana para aconsejarles esta lectura. Según sus cálculos, más de 500 niños -y sus madres- fueron salvados de los horrores del aborto.

A pesar de lo logrado, pensaba que la carta y la versión de audio de la misma eran insuficientes. Pensando, se dio cuenta que podría llegar a más personas con el video y se lanzó a la empresa: «Cuanto antes se llegue a la mujer, mejor -comentó el P. Lesniewski- por lo que decidí que el factor visual ayudaría». Con esto en mente, se dirigió a los estudios Spirit Juice, una organización que desarrolla productos sobre todo en el ámbito católico. Era el año 2009.

Desde el inicio, Rob Kaczmark se entusiasmó: «Tomamos la carta y la reestructuramos, dándole una historia. Contratamos actores profesionales, escribimos el guión. Yo tomé la responsabilidad de dirigirla y editarla».

La cosa no fue del todo fácil para el equipo...

Prefirió la adopción al aborto

Éste es el testimonio de una italiana llamada Isabel, de 19 años, estudiante de Enfermería, que se quedó embarazada tras una relación con un coetaneo que la dejó, diciéndole que no quería ser padre. Isabel, valientemente, ha decidido contar su historia a la página La Bussola Quotidiana, y Religión en Libertad (ReL) reproduce este sobrecogedor texto:

El primer impacto: «Ha dado positivo»

«Me parece que fue ayer el día que descubrí mi embarazo. Me hice la primera prueba: el ansia que crecía. La segunda prueba... positivo. Y lo miraba fijamente: positivo, ¡positivo! Una sensación de pérdida me cubre en un momento, el terror se apodera de mí y yo quedo paralizada, incapaz de reaccionar.

Mis sueños desaparecieron

»Describir una situación así es difícil, casi imposible: es como una vibración que nace de las entrañas y se propaga por todo el cuerpo, un veneno letal desde el interior que te come las energías y apaga toda luz. La única cosa que era capaz de ver era mi vida literalmente destruida y desmembrada, mis proyectos aplastados, el futuro que estaba construyendo convertirse en una utopía inalcanzable. La persona que quería ser ya no existía, era un recuerdo lejano. Mis sueños desaparecieron, junto a mis 19 años; me los había jugado para siempre.

¿Cómo salir de este desastre?

»Sólo el mero pensamiento de tener que comenzar el embarazo provocaba a mis padres un mal indescriptible. La idea de ver la desilusión impresa en sus rostros y perder su estima, me hacía enloquecer. ¿Cómo salir de este desastre?

»No obstante todo esto, la idea de abortar me asustaba mucho, muchísimo más. Pensar en esos fríos instrumentos meterse dentro de mí y hacer pedazos un cuerpecito... ¡No! No habría podido soportarlo. Había visto en internet algunas terribles fotos de fetos abortados en las primerísimas semanas: pequeñas miniaturas de una persona hecha pedazos. No, no podía.
